I know you are looking to integrate a TV stand, but I've been looking at these styles over the past year or so. Opposite from your description in that the rods are the shelves, and the acrylic (or glass), becomes the side support system.I have similar ones in wood and like the angle the cd's sit at. Mine only have a dowel for the back of each row (edit) though. And flat wood for shelf. Flat wood does keep CD's from slipping through. I suppose you could use a combination of flat acrylic shelf with steel rod back. But the thick acrylic wood be expensive as others have noted.
