Updating BassTech 7 subwoofer

to aid in my quest for a solid "foundation" for my music system claudej1@aol.com sold me his BassTech 7 (BT-7) subwoofer. After hauling 230 pounds of wood and metal from his house to my basement I hooked the beast up. Output was very good but I noticed some noise/vibration from the speaker in the 30-40HZ range. I spoke with Claude about this and he suggested replacing the servo drive unit with regular speakers.

While I considered his suggestion, I just messed with high pass filters and use the BT-7 from 50 to 80 hz. After awhile, I couldn't stand leaving the extra bandwidth of the sub unused and decided to try the upgrade. Claude just happened to have a pair of 15 inch Goldwood drivers laying around that he modeled in hornresp and they simulated well. So I took them off his hands and dove into the guts of the BT-7. If you have never seen the inside of this thing it is amazing what Tom Danley did with a servo motor! The attached Google photos link shows some pics of the inside of the unit plus the adapter I built to house the twin 15s. Once I got everything fitted properly I foam taped all around, plugged the air vent (for the blower that came with the stock unit) wired the speakers in parallel (for a 4 ohm load) and grunted the unit back in place. I have the side of BT-7 placed against the front wall with the mouth 18" from the corner.

The Google photos link also shows a graph of the output response in the room. There was no way I was going to haul the unit back upstairs and test it outside, which would give a more accurate representation of the sub's response.

I am very happy with the way the unit performs. I do not have a proper watt meter so I can't measure sensitivity but I can easily hit 123db of output at 50HZ with gain to spare. This is with using a parts express 250watt DSP sub amp. Along with the 3 other subs I have I now have a solid foundation for my listening room. There is also a graph of all 4 subs going at once (BT-7, Seismic sub and two 21 foot tapped horns).

Shout out to claudej1@aol.com for all his help and Tom Danley for his genius at designing this horn
