Here's a link to an old newspaper article I wrote about turmeric. Several times a week, my wife and I concoct a pleasant and potent tea from sliced fresh ginger and turmeric. But in its dried and powdered form, turmeric's anti-inflammatory effects are even more powerful. Turmeric's principal active ingredient is curcumin, which occurs in even higher concentrations in ginger, as well as in cumin. In the commercial capsules, you will often find the addition of piperine, an ingredient found in black or white pepper (piper nigrum). Piperine increases curcumin's potency dramatically, which is why we add a pinch of pepper to our tea cup. Alas, while it won't roll back the years, it may help with what my brother calls his Arthur Godfrey. http://www.chefhenry.com/everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-turmeric-but-were-afraid-to-ask.html
