I partially agree and disagree with you. I say that backloaded horns can make great mid and upper bass, but I do not suggest using them to make deep bass....I had Lowther drivers in Hedlund horns, and I did two things to make the mid bass (and midrange) great. First, I added supports to reduce flexing in the compression chamber and the back horn. Second, I rolled off the frequencies below about 80 hz (where a separate subwoofer took over). The net result was very tight midbass and very clean midrange (the driver was not trying to reproduce the lowest frequencies, but I was not intending it to either to avoid dopler distortion).
I mated the Hedlund Horn with a servo sub made by Genesis which had an improved accelerometer. Wow was this combination great in the bass.
I agree that these widerange drivers can be great on open baffles, but then the midbass must be produced by separate woofers instead.
