hey legarem--been through it myself! it IS a bit of a puzzle-- but if i'm not mistaken- if you've inverted polarity on a 2nd order-- basically, if your voice coil and diaphragm are in the same plane-- that's where you need to be.. which with a big horn like the 1005 means some SERIOUS overhang... i think that's why they used to put them over big front loaded horns, besides for the efficiency... just so you had a place to support the doggone thing!
way i chose to beat it was use a 2nd order on the bass, and a first on the horn.. lets me sit pretty close to alignment-- but my XO is about an octave and a half higher, which isn't practical for your setup.
i'm sure you'll get lots of takers to chime in though- most better informed than i!
