Re: sound differences - where can they hide?

Very interesting! I wouldn't a thunk it would make that much subjective difference.

Not necessarily related, but once upon a time I built some beautiful little speakers that had a decorative "frame" around the edge of the front baffle, sticking out about 3/4 of an inch. The enclosures panels were all solid cherry, and the "frame" that stuck out (in effect the front baffle was recessed) helped protect the drivers without resorting to a grille. Well, the darn speakers sounded like absolute crap - and I knew it was the frame because I'd left it out in the prototype.

So here's the experiment I did: Hold your hands cupped around your mouth pressed lightly against your face, and talk. Yuck - same coloration I heard in those speakers. Yet move your hands 1/4 inch away from your face, so there's a little gaposis, and the coloration almost totally disappears! From that, I learned a lesson about grilles and frames and such: Keep 'em off the baffle a little ways if you have to use 'em.

Maybe the extra .6" of gaposis in the good Karlson is enough of an air passageway to prevent a similar cupped-hands effect.

Just a SWAG.
