I like magnet wire too. It's so cheap it's basically free. I noticed a definite improvement from enamel-coated wire over teflon-coated CAT5. I use 30ga for compression drivers and 24ga for fullrange drivers, single twisted pair. You can twist it with an electric drill. It's the same stuff that's in your output transformers and speaker inductors, more or less. Don't use it for high voltage, but for speakers at low power (a couple volts differential) it's fine.
Another solution, which I haven't tried yet, is cheap silver wire. You can buy silver wire from any jewelry supply shop. It's cheap in the smaller gauges. For insulation try 2mm Audio-Consulting natural cotton tubes www.referenceaudiomods.com.
