A really interesting article. Mnay thanks for letting us know about it.
The curious part is the sentence about the acoustical properties of the Academy being excellent, a statement that would have been challenged in recent decades.
While the Academy is well known for its very 'dry' sound, it was also a very 'loud' venue. I have been a subscriber for over twenty years and I used to describe the orchestra as having 12 cylinders, particularly when Muti was conducting. What a powerhouse of an orchestra.
It has been interesting to listen to how the orchestra has changed since moving to Verizon Hall in the Kimmel Center with its problems (which to my ears are gradually being dealt with). It's only an 8 cylinder orchestra now, but the string sound is still to be marvelled at.
If you live in the area, season tickets with the gods are about $10 per seat per concert. And in the interests of disclosure, I have no association with the orchestra other than I am its devoted slave.
