Yeah, all these old designs are poorly braced IMO, not to mention using only 1/2" plywood in most cases! Apparently it was assumed that these would never be driven louder than a typical HIFI console. That, or they preferred all that extra resonance to make it seem more 'musical'. Still, the DIY books of the day stressed good construction techniques, materials, etc., so probably just the usual cost management to the lowest common denominator of what John Q. Public will tolerate at a given price point. Pretty low considering B0$3's overwhelming success. Then there's the low driver positioning typical of the era so they could do double duty as end tables or corner plant/whatever stands, OK for LF drivers, but wide BW ones? Yuck!
As for who gets credit for designing them, I guess it's whoever either posted a patent first and/or brought one to market, but you're a much more knowledgeable historian, so you tell me. ;^)
