FAL Flat-S

Mr. Asayama told me that the drivers sell for 200,000 yen per pair. I have no idea what others would sell them for.

The manufacturer describes them as 4-ohm, 95dB efficient drivers with 50W power handling, and 40Hz-23kHz response. How to interpret those numbers, I don't know.

I can say this: I prefer the Feastrex drivers in terms of TONE. Not that the FAL drivers are bad in that dept. -- not at all.

The Feastrex drivers have excellent imaging and soundstage, but the FAL Flat drivers are in some ways superior in these areas. I suppose it has a lot to do with being, well, flat.

The FAL drivers have a large voice coil surface area. The voice coils are RECTANGULAR, rather than round, and they have double the number of Neodymium magnets -- take a good look at the picture.

Also, note the surround. That's a "double" surround: what you see from the front is replicated, in mirror-image, on the reverse side of the diaphragm. That means the diaphragm is resistant to canting and it also maintains very consistent behavior on both the stroke forward and also the return stroke. I'm told that the surround is some special very long-lasting synthetic material made by Toray. Expect it to last a lot longer than your typical urethane edge.

All in all, it is a good driver and deserves more attention than it seems to be getting.
