RIP Mr. John M. Eargle

I have to relate the very sad news that legendary audio engineer, teacher, recording engineer and historian John Eargle passed away this week. This has come as a shock and a great loss to all who were fortunate to know him.

In his storied career Mr. Eargle worked for Klipsch, RCA Records, Altec Lansing and JBL, wrote numerous important articles and several reference level textbooks, and recorded Grammy winning recordings for Delos. His knowledge of audio science was vast, and he shared it freely in his quiet way. He was a fine pianist, and his musical sensibilities were evident in everything he did. In recent years he remained a consultant to JBL, worked on revisions to his textbooks, and taught audio classes.

John was extremely kind to the founders of the Lansing Heritage web site. His original research on Jim Lansing and JBL was the cornerstone of the site, and I think he enjoyed watching others continue his work. He was always generous with his time and knowledge, gave us unlimited access to the JBL archives, and provided JBL factory tours punctuated by his insights. Most enjoyable were the leisurely lunch conversations. We will miss him greatly!
