i dunno.. for some applications, what other alternative is there-- especially small spaces? i'd prefer slightly less defined bass to closed boxes offering 55 hz and above for a 2 way. just don't like the sub 'sound', or at least imperfectly implemented ones (the perfect ones are.. well.. BIG!).. besides, the other tenet of speaker building is 'good implementation is everything', or in other words, don't plant a banana tree in antarctica, right?i know you're a drum freak too.. so tight low bass is super important.. but i know i do alright (for myself, at least) for the vaster majority of music i love with a pair of 414's in br boxes! wish i had room in my little 800 cu/ft house for some big horns though.. but even still.. them little altec boxes sound pretty good- and i don't think they could be accused of one note bass in any way shape or form.
BUT.. there's definitely volume limitations before they go apeshit too.. gladly, i never hit that threshold in my small space-- but if you do.. i'm with ya that reflex suck! chuffa chuffa ..
