Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

First, pls read my blurb that's linked. But one thing that I didn't emphasise enough...

...is spaciousness. My systems sound BIG and DEEP. The music sounds sometimes as if the orchestra STARTS about 5' behind the speakers and goes farther back from there.

This current DIY system is the best music-reproduction I've ever heard. Of course, I've tuned it to sound the way I like, so ALL other systems start with a handicap.

The soundstage is huge, and in the best recordings, the, say, snaredrum sounds as if it's 50' behind the speakers. And altho my system has excellent center focus...that is, instruments that are in the middle of the orchestra are indeed focused in the middle and not spread left and right...it doesn't have the razor-sharp imaging that I've heard from a few systems with point-source speakers.

I hope without sounding as if I'm bragging, I'm pleased to say my room has a lot to do with the excellent sound. I rebuilt it in '82--it used to be a 14X19X8' living room; now it's a 21'-wide, 19'-deep, 6-1/2-to-12'-high room with not many parallel surfaces. See it at https://gallery.audioasylum.com/cgi/view.mpl?UserImages=30777&session= , down around the middle.

Those 6-1/2" drivers are only $10 each, minimum quantity 24, from Sonic Craft; Glowacki is clearing them out after using them for years when he built speaker systems.

The tweeters could be better, but I just didn't feel like spending $1600 or $2400 or $3200 for ribbon tweeters. The digital crossover helps LOTS in taming any hardness from the tweeters.
