I just bought some Oris 150 horns for a bit of fun. I searched this forum and found an incredibly diverse arrary of subs being used. But none of the setups seem to use much logic.Q. I would have thought that the ideal sub would be a dipole (linkwitz style) as any sort of ported or TL bass will have delay/energy storage issues which will not gel with the crisp sound of a horn, and generally horn loaded bass modules rarely work well below 50Hz (which is not enough for me)
Or am I missing something? These would be my first horns and I can build and then measuire stuff quite easily but there is no point making mistakes others have made already if horns don't obey the logic that applies to conventional drivers.Q2. Most users seem to use no bass rolloff on the Oris driver. I accept that they don't want to introduce any phase or over processing issues with a crossover. But a lowther has a very small linear displacement region and the driver will have very little air loading below 100Hz so it surely would easily go out of the linear region of the gap on large bass signals (say 40-80Hz region) and even though the bass output would not be heard as the driver is not efficiently coupled in this region the higher bands will be distored also while the coil is out of the sweet spot of the gap.
I would have thought a simple capacitive 6dB/octave coupling between the premap and the poweramp, sized to give a first order rolloff below 150Hz (ala Dahlquist Quad crossover etc) would be a worthwhile addition without adding any phase changes or active components.
Or has this be tried and discarded by those before me?Q3. Finally I know from having used some older Lowther speakers in the past that the lowther treble is somewhat lacking. I have thought of adding a conventional (but minature profile) super tweeter which would be mounted coaxially on a support at the FRONT of the Oris horn mouth and driven actively via a separate amp and with suitable delay dialed in to keep the correct time alignment with the lowther main driver. Probably crossing in around 8KHz if I remember my previous Lowther response plots.
Has anyone tried this? Any tips? Eg horizonal or vertical support, material & damping of the support? Aerodynamic profile used? etc(Mind you if noone has tried any of this stuff then watch this space and I will post my results)
