The reason that, to this day, witnesses in court must hold their right hands up in the air for all to see is that, in Medieval times in England, persons convicted of a (non-capital-punishment) Felony--you guessed it--were branded with a hot iron applied to their right index fingers, so that for the rest of their lives, honest people would know not to trust them.
