but its successor DVP-NS999ES does not read CD-R. The players that do read CD-R are SCD-1 and 777ES. Both of them use the optical pickup that was developed by Sony for DVD-ROM computer drives compatible with CD-R. Later model pickups were designed specifically for players (not for computers), so compatibility with CD-R (which was a hard task to achieve) was dropped.
