I've not heard this particular Jarvi, but I'm not surprised--I've come to believe he is one of the latest batch of "sensible" conductors, much like Spano. Not a foot wrong, not one indulgent phrase. Some music can take it, like Nielsen and Stravinsky, (at least the Rite); I also think Ravel can work this way, but not Debussy, Elgar or Rachmaninoff, at least the way we've come to expect Rachmaninoff. Surprisingly I've recently heard Rach's own performances, and they are marked with clarity and restraint.
