for the SCD-777ESNo component change, cable, tweak (ha ha), regardless of cost, has brought me anywhere near as significant a gain in sound reproduction as has the Allen Wright VSE 5+ upgrade. If you want to get off of the roundy round of changing this cable and that power cord to get you there and you have a Sony 777, this be the place to go. You will soon laugh at the many incremental differences that you tried in the past, only to rationalise to yourself that you think you heard a subjective difference. My friends, this upgrade is not a subjective difference. It has the capability to transform your system from a very good sounding stereo to making you laugh at all the transistors vs tubes, analog vs digital controversy. How 'bout live versus reproduced, regardless of how you got there?
The only air I want to hear is that of the original recording studio, hall or club; minus the smoke. Now if I can get Ben Webster, Chet Baker and Monk to quit playing before 1 A.M., I'd be much better rested.
Have you ever stood near the box that live musicians are playing in? The sound there is much different than say the seated positions in a club or in a home music system. For me, not any more.
Let the flames be cast. Especially from the people who have paid 8 grand for a player, only to now need 5 grands worth of modifications. Ditto for the EMM DAC guys, who a year after falling all over themselves about their purchases are now selling their prized 10 + K DAC on Audiogon for the latest EMM Labs player. For my 12 extra grand unspent, I think I'll buy some CDs. They sound quite nice on this player. SACDs put you squarely in the box.
Product Weakness: Clicks when quing up and stopping a disc. This is a byproduct of the direct coupling of the product, hence the transparency. Product Strengths: Absolute transparency to the source of the music.
