suddenly my sony 555ES has been doing EXACTLY the same thing.have had it for 3 years,never a problem,and now it just started.happens on the same disc whether 2ch or MC layer but when I put it into my SCD-1,no dropouts.So,IMO,I think its the player.I tried the aluminum foil but it did not work."Hear" what happens.would like to know what you(or anyone else)is doing or has done.another post said the laser assembly.i have a feeling that's the route i'm going to take.
