...and you are absolutely correct. I was stunned at how good the CD sounded--very analog-like and totally free of the harsh, strident quality that has been in all previous CD remasterings. Amazingly, it replicates pretty faithfully the sound I vividly remember from my old Soria Series LPs and open-reels. I didn't think Decca had it in them to remaster it this way. It's too bad it's not an SACD, but the RBCD sounds pretty damned good in its own right. This really bodes well for the other releases in the series--I was bemoaning the fact that Solti's Mahler 8th was being reissued yet again, but now I'm hoping for a similar transformation. (All previous CD issues of this recording have really sounded awful to me.)Thanks again for the rec--I'll try the War Requiem next!
