Where has all the time gone?I bought my Sony 9000ES DVD/SACD player in December 2000. At the time, there were only 70 SACDs available and only 2 or 3 new SACDs were issued each month.
I remember waiting for the Byrds Greatest Hits SACD. It's an album that I once owned and liked.
I was pleased with the Byrds SACD. Thought it had extended highs and and decent bass. At the time, I tended to listen for the extremes: bass and trebble.
I just listened to the Byrds for the first time in a couple years. I was disappointed.
First, the SACDs being issued today are far better than those issued in 2000 - 2001. The Police, Dylan, Stones, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Alison Krause, Sam Cooke, and Norah Jones are far superior to the Byrds.
Then I listened to my first rock SACD, Texas Flood by Billie Ray Vaughan. Everyone raved about this SACD back in 2001. Same thing. I was unimpressed. My standards have raised.
For me, SACD now most impresses me with dynamic range and mid-range clarity. Both the Byrds and Vaughan sound compressed, and I can't make out some of the instuments. But mainly, they just do not have the dynamic range and liveliness that I now expect.
I've even started to listen to my vinyl more often. I would have thought that SACD would have taken me away from my vinyl.
SACD has educated me.
