Hirez Experiments

Posted on PC Audio and edited today.

I have been listening to a Simon Rattle American Night DVD-V (48k16bit) DVD and found it rathjer coarse in the treble although very nice music.

So, I ripped this to the HD and upsampled with Audition 1.5 to 88.2k 32bit, ending up with a whopping 3.5 Gb file from 900 Mb! I also created a larger file at 96k 32 bit. Note: Cannot create 24 bit files.

Played these with Foobar, no resampling and they sounded very nice thru my Terratec 24/96 optical output into an Assemblage D2D jitter buster then a RME ADI-2 dac. These were compared with the 48/16 file thru Foobar with and without Secret Rabbit upsampling to 88.2k/98k 32 bit. The latter were somewhat muted and nothing at all near the Audition file or the original. In fact, the src that comes with Foobar sounded better.

I then made a DVD-V with Audio DVD Creator at 96k24bit and played this thru a modified Pioneer DV575. The thing sounded dismal.

I then played the DVD thru WinDVD6 Plat on the computer thru the same ancilliarey as before. This time, the sound was better but still left a lot to be desired.

Conclusion, I don't know except that Audition 1.5 resampling tightened the bass, tamed the treble, and made the music a whole lot better! All this with the same digital data!!!

Would be good to have CD/DVD/SACD transports that also play wav files!
