It's not quite clear from what you wrote, but sampling DSD single bit directly results in 4 times as many bits per second versus sampling at 44.1/16 PCM.So more information is gathered, both in effective bit depth and in bandwidth.
And no matter what you do with the 44.1/16 bit data stream, you will never get back the information that has been lost.
Of course it is arguable whether the extra information is audible to human ears- but if there is any magic, and to me there is some, I would attribute it to the additional audio information that is stored and retrieved.
