I think I was not clear enough and should have added another qualification to my statements. (Lot’s of potential for miscommunication on these boards!)Do you really think that ALL analog stages and DACS in ilink-equipped pre-pros and receivers (the receiving end of the firewire connection) are ALWAYS better than the analog section and DACS of the player?
No.
Why would someone spend huge $$ on a player like the 5910, Ayre, or the 9600 (mine) where care and $$ have been spent on the analog stage (and video, of course) and the dacs, etc and then simply connect a firewire cable and bypass all that!
I tried to qualify my statements by using the phrase “comparison between firewire and analogue using the same equipment” – and I meant at both ends of the connection (whether the connection is Firewire or analogue). So basically, the only difference would be the Firewire vs. analogue connection – no other change of equipment at either end of the connection. I did not mean to say that Firewire is the be-all and end-all – as you say, it’s all about tradeoffs, and I don’t disagree with that. What I was trying to say is that if you keep the same equipment at both ends of the connection, it’s been my experience that the Firewire connection will be noticeably superior. I believe this experience is consistent with other reports I’ve read both here and in the audio press.
But I see from your comments/examples that I should have qualified things still further – I did not foresee a scenario such as the one implied by your example where the player is significantly better (e.g., containing superior DACS) than the pre/pro or receiver. I was thinking along the lines of equivalent levels of component quality at each end of the connection. In other words, I was focused on the connection itself, which I thought was the original poster’s question. My bad!
My 9600 trounces my 4806 (very nice Denon pre-pro-tuner) with analog vs firewire.
I have no direct experience with this comparison, but I believe you! (Again, I should have put that second qualification – equivalent levels of component quality – in my original post!)
