If you don't have an HDMI input, there are two other ways to get high resolution audio to your preamp. You can use firewire (a connection that no next gen hardware manufacturer has yet announced and which your preamp probably doesn't have) or the analog outputs of the player.The drives and associated firmware are chosen by the manufacturer, so SACD support is solely up to the manufacturer of the player.
Today a chip manufacturer announced that they will make a "system on a chip" available that will allow a player to read CDs, DVDs, HD-DVDs and BluRay discs. That means one player for all formats.
