Re: Whoa! Who said anything about a TV!

Robert, I think from your later message that you know that I was not necessarily referring to home theatre per se but to any situation involving a third speaker and cabinet placed between the L/R channels of a stereo system. Of course many people do place their TV set in that position either for home theatre purposes or simply bcause that's the way that their room is arranged.

A major part of the effect that I refer to is not just the bulk of the TV or third speaker cabinet but the undriven speaker which will re-radiate sound out of phase back into the listening space. There is an interesting possibilty here when comparing 2 channel with multi channel if the two systems are mostly separate except for the listening space and perhaps L & R front speakers. I am envisioning the kind of system where a multi channel amp is used for one form of listening but for two channel listening a dedicated stereo or 2 X monobloc amp is used. In that case when the stereo amp is used to drive the 2 channel system with the MCH amp switched off the above problem will surface. However if the centre speaker remains powered the effect with be reduced as the amp's damping factor will control the back EMF from the centre speaker. Still leaves the box reflection though.

Maybe I will try to borrow a speaker from a friend someday just to place between my stereo speakers and then report what I find. I ought to borrow a little amp too just to replicate the idea of powering the centre channel even if no signal is being sent to it.
