I think eventually even the DACs on PCDPs will be good enough give a smooth sound...not that most people will appreciate it. Considering how far the digital medium has come in 20 years, IF they continue to make PCDP players I think the sound quality will get better and better, as the prices go down. But then, maybe in the future we'll all be listening to iPods, so who knows. That was why I was so excited to hear Sony's plans to improve the sound of their portable line. It may be a trend for the industry in general--once again, whether or not most people actually hear a difference. What I am REALLY hoping for is a portable player from Sharp that will take on the iPod. Sharp has done a lot of work in improving the sound of their MD players--upsampling and such. If they can get their act together...who knows?
