"...one of the greatest-sounding recordings I've ever heard, though it's not really a sonic spectacular..." (Greatest sounding and then not a sonic spectacular?)First of all, it's a great record period. I haven't compared directly one to the other, but agree with Thornhill re mastering on Sony SACD, which I own. I have a mint LP copy in another town.
Secondly, it is a top notch performance, one of the best ever & one of the earlier Cleveland recordings with the best orchestra of the USA. They may still be now but Thornhill wants Philly to take over :)
Third, I recently noted this is an early Masonic Temple recording. They used Severance on most of Szell's work and then switched to Masonic for Maazel and later. So, you may be enjoying the sonics at the Masonic Temple better than Szell's Severance recordings. I agree having lived this conductor's work for much of my life that they cranked up the treble and esp. mid range on the records. I also maintain that Beethoven Symphony CD's by these artists sound more natural than most of the Epic and CBS LP's. One gentleman states that the best Beethoven 9th was the gold label radial line Epic LP, not the digital medium ones, though. I don't have many of those, perhaps a Mahler 10th/Walton Partita disc in rather poor condition. I'll have to check.
