Glad we're approximately on the same page--literally and metaphorically--once again!Mea culpa regarding the now-deleted Chailly #8: immediately got a drilled copy from an Amazon Marketplace dealer for $5.95! Hope the compatability problems--the wonderful and much-lamented EMIs aside--that tend to bedevil many DVD-As on my two Denons (DVD-A/DVD-V and SACD/Universal) don't prevent my enjoying it. The 'Resurrection' is still current, I observe.
I believe Nagano to be--in the context of the current dearth of potentially great maestri aged under 50--immensely promising. Limited repertoire, I'd concede; but his work in Manchester totally transforming a weak and dispirited Halle; his consolidation of Ashkenazy's sterling work in Berlin; his distinguished recordings of Britten, Messiaen and Schonberg indicate, perhaps, that the Bayerische Staatsoper have not lost their collective marbles. No current evidence to suggest a future Keilberth or Sawallisch.... but give the guy a chance!!
Macal, I have in the past found uneven outside the Smetana/Dvorak Bohemian repertoire but cannot afford to sample his Japanese GM: SACDs for millionaires!
The remark about the Neumann on Supraphon/Denon amazed me. This is one of my desert island discs!!! Don't have any Mahler scores so can't check it out. Perhaps next time you have a moment or two of enforced idleness, you could access it and let me know minutes and seconds?? Terrible thing to ask, I'll agree.........
Regards, John
