Here's a reply that I received from Marantzs' Kevin Zarow , he mentions "Plus a few other changes to improve the audio and video" but didn't go into any detail:

The DV9600 has many improvements over the DV9500

Upsampling to 1080P
PDDV (Pure Direct Digital Video) - 480i through HDMI
IEEE with Flow Rate Control (for connection to SR9600) or other
Receivers with IEEE input
HDMI 1.1 output
Direct IR input
Plus a few other changes to improve the audio and video
