mine's a slightly different problem. there's no issues reading TOC, and no skipping. i just get intermittent dropouts - particular when the unit has warmed up, and only on certain discs.based on this, i'm concluding the alignment is fine, but the laser may need replacing (given the player is now 3-4 years old).
given how prickly sony australia is, it's far better to get it replaced by an authorised service centre rather than persuading them to send spare parts to me. panasonic on the other hand seems to have no issues with people doing their own repairs - they will even do some hand holding over the phone if you need some tips and suggestions.
