New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

Some general comments...

since I don't own a 9000, and my experience as a mod consumer is restricted to having had a Sony SCD-777ES and a (non-SACD) Pioneer DV-525's audio section modded by two different--both reputable-- modders who visit this site from time to time. You can say that I believe in mods that are done right and find the performance results to represent excellent value.

If you decide to have your player modded, given its age and the fact that mods void your warranty and _may_ make the regular service centers reluctant to touch the unit, you should make sure that the tech who performs the mod can also perform the basic replacement, alignment, and other procedures required when original parts (e.g., laser, transport motors, etc.) fail due to age and use. I've heard of some instances (_not_ involving the modders I've used) where a tech who's performed the mod can't or won't do basic service work.

With that in mind, I'd suggest that you call around to potential modders and get a feel for what they know and how they're likely to treat you with respect to post-mod work should the need arise.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
