My dCS Verdi had a lot of trouble reading dual layer SACDs. I sent it back to England for repair, and it turned out the problem was caused by dust on the lens (and perhaps slight misalignment of the laser). Now, its back, and reads every SACD perfectly without a glitch. The info I got from dCS is that the laser optics for SACDs are a lot more critical than those for CDs (due to the much higher data density). Slight misalignments that would not cause problems reading the CD layer may cause the SACD layer to not be recognized or played.
So, if you are having trouble with reading dual layer SACDs, try cleaning the lens (if your player is under warranty send it back to the manufacturer).
