My personal opinion is that the real action or cutting edge of digital development is done by the various people who perform modifications or rebuilts and not necessarily by the 'establishment'. That may sound harsh and unfair to many fantastic manufacturers, but I loved my old Porsche 911 knowing full well that several people outside Porsche could make it even better.I have heard the Ayre and the Esoteric in nice systems and I actually like the Ayre very much (on CD and SACD). I was less impressed with the Esoteric, but it was in an unfamiliar system etc so do not take my word very seriously. And come to think of it it was the 11K X1 I listened to. But based on my experience both were easily surpassed by various modified units. And some of these units can be purchaed at or well under your pricepoint. Naturally there are other choices that affect such a purchase, but you asked for some views and here is mine. Listen to these things in your own system before you buy is always good advise I think.
Have fun
