Abe, while I agree in the logic that the two should sound the same do to being from the same master, in my machine, the SACD layer sounds better. Could it be due to Sony's intentionally altering the capability of redbook in order to widen the perception gap between redbook and SACD? A pleasant artifact due to the DSD encoding process? Very possibly. Heck, people readily accept the distorions of tube amplifiers as sounding more pleasant. Why not digital artifacts? Was there mention of either possibility in Stereophile? Regardless, the nasal tone of her crappy mic is ever so much more present on the DSD layer. Also, why does the magazine readily accept that upsampled discs via the way overpriced 25 dollar name witheld players playing red book CDs sound better? Upsampled, oversampled. Regadless. They too all come from the same 16 bit master. Or could it be that the analog section of these higest end players is the reason for the increased resolution and the digital section is getting the credit. Or just plain old Sterophile objectivity with them pushing certain products?
