New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

I'm just funny that way ...

I prefer to listen to a player the way the designer intended. These days, DACs are designed to match specific op amps and specific filters, otherwise they may not meet the measured specs as per the data sheets. More often that not, stock player designs tend to stick pretty close to the Application Note.

Now a modder may be able to subjectively improve the sound by replacing the output stage with different op amps, or perhaps discrete high quality components.

But is that truly better, if the measured specs are perhaps now worse? I don't know. Our ears are easily fooled - it's easy to convince ourselves that the sound is "better" when it is simply "different".

I prefer to choose a player that sounds good to me right from the start, rather than buy a player that didn't sound right and hope that i will like it if i mod it, especially if the sound wasn't what the original designer intended.

Modders (particularly those on this asylum) are fond of disparaging stock designs and pointing out flaws in them. But are these truly flaws? - we seldom get to hear the original designer's point of view. It's tempting to believe the not-so-subtle marketing messages that the modders are trying to push - I prefer not to void the warranty.
