As you can tell, there are many ways to go from where you are now. After having the Transport mod and the SC2 installed in my unit by R Kern, I then scoured the archives of this website for the posts of J Hietebrink, fmak, audioeyedoc, and others, on how to mod the SCD777ES at modest cost. I then performed most of the mods described by those guys between about 2001 and 2004, myself. It's too long a list to post, but the results were/are very satisfying; in fact, I would not have believed that the unit could be improved so dramatically without really changing the output stage per se. To my further amazement, my unit did not blow up when I first powered it up after working on it. (I am fairly experienced with tube gear, but this was my first foray into solid state or digital stuff.) There is still more that I could do and will do, especially with regard to discrete power supplies and regulator upgrades. Bang for buck if you are not into DIY is the Allen Wright level 5 upgrade-outstanding. But in fairness I have not heard any of the alternative commercially available mods.BTW, I do not think the Vishay resistor upgrade is likely to be worth the cost. Most of the resistors that will be removed and replaced are Rikens, which are pretty nice sounding to begin with. Better to learn something about the circuit and to then replace only those resistors that are in parts of the circuit that will benefit most. Where necessary, I used nude Vishays (in the RC filter near the I/V chips), which are better sounding IMO than the ones you will get with the total Vishay upgrade. Also, as fmak hinted, my research suggested that the OPA627 does not sound as good as some other alternative chips that actually cost less, e.g., AD825 or AD826; I chose the latter and am very pleased. There may be newer products that are even superior to those.
