The 1981 Goldberg recording was recorded digitally, so it's no surprise the SACD is from a digital source.The session was also recorded on analog tape, and a CD made from these tapes was released later, after the SACD came out. Many people have said the CD made from the analog tapes sounds better than the SACD made from the PCM recording.
I have never read or heard that Sony used PCM copies of analog tapes for their SACDs.
