Wonderful comments that, based on my listening to only two of the works from the set so far, "Symphony No. 2" and the "Youth Symphony" (Disc 2), reflect totally my early impressions. The Largo of the Symphony #2 actually seems to get the performance off to a very good start but then things plateau after that never rising to really inspire. The performance is certainly not a downer but it lacks energy and the utmost in musicality.
Having never heard the "Youth Symphony" before I found it refreshing and enjoyable (as enjoyable as a second tier composition will allow, but enjoyable nonetheless).
I agree that (in the Second Symphony) some musicians are given (at times) an unnatural prominence. And while the violins sound great at times they were sometimes too pronounced and would not allow the left speaker set to disappear as what can happen in recordings of demonstration quality.
These recordings do have the significant sound quality advantage of also being in multi-channel. The two recordings I have listened to were well done in this regard. This, of course, does not make up the deficit of a "just OK performance"
