I'd love to, but, the CD business has been in contraction for a few years, leading to generally negative financial results at JMR. Tower Records, before their bankruptcy, was JMR's biggest customer. After they reorganized, they have bought nothing, as they are generally out of smaller independent classical labels and jazz too. If a record is a hit, they might stock it, but they are out of the deep-catalog business. So, there are two holdbacks to JMR SACDs. First, I'd need a new strategic alliance or a new source of capital (and I am looking all the time).
Secondly, I estimate break-even on a first-class production at about 4,000 units. Getting from zero to 4,000 in 90 to 120 days is the challenge. Right now, frankly, I don't see it happening. Lightning can strike--Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's Handel aria recital has shipped about 15,000 SACDs in the US. But hoping for lightning to strike is not a business plan.
If anyone has better wisdom than I on break-even, I'd love to hear it.
Cordially,
JM
