Re: Bitter WOTW disappointment

I did an interview with Jeff Wayne when he was out here in Australia the other week, and specifically asked about the replacing of instruments (such as, for example, the snare drum at the top of "Horsell Common and the Heat Ray", which did a "flam" on the original and doesn't in the new mixes. He said that since they recorded the band live in the studio for the original album, the takes they ended up using had some mistakes in them, which he has taken the opportunity to correct using ProTools. He stressed that no new instruments have been added - everything is from the original multitracks.

I also suggested to him that, to me, the multichannel mix sounds more like the old quadraphic mixes of the 1970s - in other words, placing instruments all over the place and putting things in the "centre" of the multichannel image, rather than the usual front-heavy approach we're more familiar with. He seemed puzzled, saying that most surround mixes to this point had been "fake surround" while this one was discrete. Methinks he needs to go buy a few SACDs - or else, maybe his take on multichannel sound is very different to most others'.

As far as the new stereo mix goes, I like it a lot. It's *very* faithful to the original mix. As for the actual original, well, the master tapes weren't in the best condition for the 1995 SBM remaster (listen to those dropouts!) so I can only imagine how bad it sounds by now.
