all an SACD needs is a high resolution DSD layer. As far as I know there is NO requirement that the Master tape be high resolution as there are SACDs from 44.1kHz 16Bit Masters.Right now I am listening to a DGG SACD (Boulez's Ravel) that is 44.1kHz 24 Bit which I bought over the internet and to me doesn't sound much better than a CD, the 24 Bit rate does help but it is still low resolution.
I usually look for either DSD or Analog masters but sometimes there is a piece of music I really want I am willing to compromise.
Being an SACD is no guarentee of high resolution, the master tape also has to be high resolution.
Happy listening,
Teresa
