Good headphones can equal or even surpass a good loudspeaker setup, at least in certain ways. Good headphones provide an unsurpassed sense of sonic purity and an intimate sensation that loudspeakers do not always provide, giving you special insights into the music and the recording processes. Loudspeakers provide much more realistic scale and visceral impact. Headphones transmit well (for the most part) much of the intellectual/emotional impact provided by music, but little of it's actual "body". Recording engineers often use both headphones and loudspeakers to create and evaluate recordings. I also prefer having both, each way of listening being a fun and unique thing in and of itself.
