For some reason, I can't seem to warm up to my Koss electrostatics, even when using a $3400 STAX driver unit. They definitely sound a lot better with the STAX driver than the Koss energizer, but they still don't make me want to keep listening to them. Consequently, I think you're right about their value being more like $500 than $1000. I bought my Koss electrostatics on Amazon seven years ago for a total of $681, which included tax and shipping. There's no way I would pay $1000 for them.
I bought some FiiO FT5 Planar Magnetic Headphones several months ago and I prefer listening to the FiiO headphones. They sound more robust and well balanced than the Koss electrostatics, and they cost only $450. In my opinion, these FiiO planar magnetic headphones represent a much better value and they're also easier to listen to. They have thicker ear cushions and even though they're heavier, they're more comfortable because they don't press against my ears.
Happy listening!
