Well, I have the Ayre C-5xe and some Tacet discs. I'm not convinced that the surround sound can be folded into 2-channels successfully, especially if you care about imaging and purity of timbre. Both seem to suffer in comparison to dedicated 2-channel recordings.
If the engineers don't set the microphones to get an good 2-channel mix, it's difficult to get it artificially. Mercury used to set its three microphones to get a successful mono recording by positioning the center mike first for the mono, and then adding the the outer mikes for the 3-track stereo recording.
Tacet records to put the listener in the center of the musicians. Other companies keep the musicians up front and use the surround channels for ambiance and to create a sense of space. I have commented on Audio Asylum that many SACD surround recordings sound like the 2-channel track is an after thought. I recently took the poll on the Channel Classics website. Two-channel listeners have a slight edge over surround listeners. I would hope the engineers don't neglect us 2-channelers.
Still the Tacet discs can be enjoyed for the music and a general sense of the sound.
