sample rate and bit depth

There are many products out there which follow the rules lower the quality of the digital output. If you're getting a signal via optical, check to see what sample rate and, if possible, what bit depth is being output. Digital output may be allowed, but it's possible that you may only get 16/48 instead of 24/96.
