In April 2005 http://db.audioasylum.com/scripts/t.pl?f=dvda&m=20504 Christine Tham posted a tip for decoding HDCD to 24bit 44.1 PCM.
I wanted to try this, but my soundcard does not have multiple outputs so I couldn't make it work.
Today I found a plugin for WMP http://www.chronotron.com/binaries/wavoutsetup.msi that saves the decoded 24bit output as wav files. I tested with the Reference Recordings HDCD Sampler from 1992 and the resulting wav files are indeed 24bit 44.1kHz. I can not tell for sure if the result can be compared to the output from a HDCD CD player, as my player is not HDCD capable. Anybody else tried this? Christine, maybe you could test this vs. the method you described?
