Thanks for the information on the Vanguard/Omega Everest CDs. I don't own of of these. Your comments on their pitch stability support the idea that the pitch problem of the HDAD discs is not with the 35mm master tapes. It seems unlikely that something happened to the master tapes in the intervening decade.
I remember reading an extended article of the Everest series on the Classic Records website. I couldn't find this article. However, I found this: "The original edited 3-track 35mm master tapes were used for this historic project of remastering for the Classic Everest 35mm LP and HDAD series. Using a specially modified Ampex 1551, with Lee Horowitz running the tape machine, Bernie Grundman does the honors of transferring to lacquers these 45+ year old gems of recorded history."
Ampex 1551? I was unable to find any information on this machine. I have a vague recollection that this machine, or one with a very similar number, was used in tape duplication. Specially modified? If the machine doesn't have sprockets, I can imagine the possibility of tape slippage in the tape path. I am now thinking that this may be the source of the problem. I too am surprised that no one at Classic Records noticed this.
