This may be simply a matter of semantics but are you actually turning the center channel "off" or are you telling your system that there is no center channel? I am thinking in terms of the speaker set up menu. Most menus I have seen allow you to select "large", "small" or "none". I suppose I have made the same assumption you have with "none" selected as with "off" but I have never had to do this. I will test this by selecting "none" on my system and see if I lose the vocal in the multichannel mode. I will report the results.
