"#1: Will this unit upsample my regular CDs and enhance their sound? I assume not, otherwise they would advertise that feature."Since it does not say whether it upsamples/oversamples regular CDs you are probably right, probably not but maybe you can download the manual at the Cambridge Audio website and see if they tell you or call/email their customer service. There are many people who do not like upsampling/oversampling and claim it does more harm than good to the sound. Also, even if it doesn't upsample regular CDs they may still sound better on this player than the one you are using. If your budget will allow it, take a look at the Cambridge 640C II. IMO it is an excellent value for the sound and money.
"#2: Is "Downmix Stereo Out" a feature that would take, for example, Bowie's Stage DVD-A Surround Mix and allow me to play it thru my 2-channel amp/stereo...as opposed to being satisfied with the PCM 24/48 stereo mix on the Bowie disk?"
Yes, the surround is downmixed to 2 channel but according to your earlier post the Bowie CD is already 24/48 in 2 channel so it wouldn't make since to downmix it from 24/48 surround, just play the 2 channel version. In general, 24/48 should sound better than 16/44 but it also depends on the recording and how it was mastered. Some CDs actually sound better than their DVD-A or SACD version.
